WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO-AM) — U.S. Sen. Gary Peters says he’s expecting Congress to pass federal reforms on criminal justice next year.
Peters, D-Michigan, says he’s hoping to gain some traction on a bipartisan bill.
“We need to have a complete, top-to-bottom review of our criminal justice system, particularly given after what we’ve seen in Ferguson, Baltimore and Staten Island.”
Peters says the legislation currently allows for the creation of a commission to assess police behavior.
It would be first formation of such a panel in 60 years.
“It’s something that, I think, is getting some momentum, particularly with sentence reform and other criminal justice issues.”
So far, the bill has 22 co-sponsors, including 10 Republicans.
