KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A social media posting regarding chemical-laced masks has been dispelled by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
On Monday, officials wrote that a circulating post claimed criminals are going door-to-door handing out free masks as part of a new government initiative.
The post claims that the criminals ask the victim to try the mask on, which is laced with chemicals that cause the wearer to lose consciousness.
The victim is then robbed.
However, the Sheriff’s Office wrote that this post is false.
“KCSO has investigated this posting and has contacted police agencies around the nation,” officials wrote. “Not one case has been verified and no one has been able to find the source of the original posting. Right now, law enforcement believes this is to be untrue and that an unknown source is intentionally scaring the public. As always please contact local law enforcement with any suspicious occurrence or person.”
The department asks users to cease sharing of the post, and to not share information like this unless it’s from an actual law enforcement agency.
