LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Michigan has been producing wine for a lot longer than it has been hosting microbreweries and mini-distilleries. The newer kids on the block are paying the same fees into the state that supports the Michigan Grape and Wine Council.
However, Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, says that board currently doesn’t have any members and doesn’t entirely meet the needs of the evolving sector.
Proos has proposed legislation that would change that and rename of the council to reflect the change.
“It would make a cohesive group, a cohesive group that they’d all pay into, to try to advertise, market and otherwise bring greater attention to the Michigan wine, beer and spirits that are occurring in southwest Michigan,” Proos said.
Four members would be added to the newly-reconfigured Grape, Wine, Brewing and Distilling Industries Council if his proposal becomes law.
