KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – In a politically charged decision Tuesday night, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners picked a new interim head administrator to step in when the current County Administrator steps down in two weeks.
The board voted 6-4 to appoint current Kalamazoo County Health Director Jim Rutherford to serve as Interim Administrator until a permanent administrator can assume the job sometime this spring.
Rutherford, who has already been assisting in the interim management, was the only one who came in with a plan.
Democrats on the board said he is far and away the most experienced and capable to hit the ground running, but Republicans like Commissioner John Gisler said after the mask mandate controversy, he is tainted goods.
Rutherford was picked after the board deadlocked on proposals that Clerk Meredith Place and former Portage City Manager Larry Schaffer fill the interim post.
