KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A GoFundMe page has been published for a Kalamazoo man who suffered severe burns while pulling his three-year-old son from their burning Reed Street residence on Christmas morning.
Organizers are asking for at least $10,000 through the fundraising website to help cover medical expenses and replace belongings Kerwin Barnum lost in the blaze. He remains at Bronson Methodist Hospital in serious condition after rescuing Dominique Barnum from the structure before 2 a.m. Friday.
Family members say the fire was sparked by a space heater that was placed too close to a couch. It left Kerwin Barnum and his son, brother Kennon Barnum and his children, and a woman rescued from an upstairs apartment without a place to live. It also destroyed Kerwin Barnum’s possessions and the gifts under the family’s Christmas tree.
Kerwin Barnum had turned 45 that morning. He does not have health insurance.
