KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools thought they had rounded the corner on their busing problems late last year, but the surging pandemic, and a chronic shortage of drivers has canceled nearly a dozen bus routes Monday morning.
It prompted the school district to renew their call for applicants.
Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri says drivers are working extra shifts, but it’s not enough.
The district is also struggling to find substitute teachers, food service workers and now Operations Director Jim English says even finding help to make building repairs has become a slow and expensive process.
English says its a national issue, but one that they may feel more acutely because Kalamazoo’s school buildings are older and need more maintenance.
