LANSING MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A shortage of first responders across the state of Michigan has resulted in the announcement of a program to help fund efforts to attract candidates to the field…but an official with an organization connected with the profession says it doesn’t include everyone it should.
The grants to find possible applicants are available through the First Responder Training and Recruitment Grant Program, and governments can apply to get up to $100,000 to assist in the recruiting efforts.
However, a spokesperson for the Michigan Association of Ambulance Services (MAAS) maintains that most EMTs are excluded from the program because they are not government run.
MAAS emphasized that while the 5-million-dollar program is a good start, overall, more than 20 million is needed to properly train the number of EMTs and paramedics that are needed.
