KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – These are nervous times for Kalamazoo City and County Commissioners as they meet face to face for the first time since the pandemic began nearly two years ago, and despite the fact that COVID-19 just won’t go away.
Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain says the state legislature has left them with no other options. The law allowing cities and municipalities to meet virtually expired December 31, 2021.
He says City Commission chambers have been upgraded to allow hybrid meetings, and decked out with Plexiglass, and there will be PPE at the door.
Both the City and County boards will skip their Committee of the Whole meetings this week and plan brief but action-packed agendas.
Tonight at 7:00 p.m., City Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the 2022 budget.
You will still be able to comment on the budget live or by phone, but it will have to be during the meeting, they are ending prerecorded comments.
Kalamazoo County Commissioners meet Tuesday night in their upgraded chambers on Kalamazoo Avenue. On tap is their annual organizational meeting at 7:00 p.m. to pick leadership for the year.
Despite the precautions, many commissioners have said still think it’s too early to return to in-person sessions.
