KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A man charged with one count of open murder will be headed to trial, police reported this week.
23-year-old John Jacob Spangenberg is accused of shooting 21-year-old McKenna Dutkiewicz at his apartment during a gathering earlier this summer.
The incident took place in the 1300 block of Jack Pine Way
Dutkiewicz later died from injuries caused by the gunshot. Spangenberg told police that he thought the gun was unloaded at the time of the shooting.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Spangenberg has waived his preliminary hearing and will instead be bound over to stand trial.
His next hearing date is currently unknown.
Dutkiewicz, a 2017 graduate, had spent two years at Eastern Michigan University and was planning on transferring to Western Michigan University.
