CONSTANTINE (WKZO-AM) — The president of the Constantine Village Council is trying to get her colleagues to consider a ban on assault rifles within village limits.
Village Manager Mark Honeysett says, at this stage, Patricia Weiss only wants a conversation about possible restrictions.
“The president asked the council to review some documents that she had in regard to proliferation of assault weapons for conversation at a later meeting,” Honeysett said.
But he also says, if those discussions were to lead to an ordinance, the law would only be symbolic, because state gun laws trump any restrictions signed by local governments.
“I think it was mostly just to send a message to our state senator and state representative,” Honeysett said.
Honeysett said the group will likely discuss the matter again on Jan. 18.
Weiss was not at Monday’s meeting and could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
