KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A March 1 trial date has been set for a man accused of embezzling money from a charity motorcycle ride for a Kalamazoo Public Safety officer killed in the line of duty.
Prosecutors say Joseph Weeks Jr. diverted between $1,000 and $20,000 from the 2011 EZ Memorial Ride for personal use, which led to a deficit for the event. Weeks was the president of the club that organized the ride to benefit the family of Eric Zapata.
Detectives are also trying to figure out if Weeks had anything to do with the death of his 73-year-old mother, who died in 2012 while living with her son.
