KALAMAZOO (WKZO) — City Commissioners have received a proposal from staff that will require a hike in taxes and a cut in services in order to maintain the city’s Solid Waste programs.
Bid prices are going up.
The proposal is to reduce bulk curbside trash pick-ups from monthly to once every three months. The City’s Wendy Burlingham says it will allow them to maintain and fund weekly recycling.
They may also schedule additional bulk pick-ups in the fall and spring and scheduled around the time that Western closes for the summer.
She says they have been propping up the program by using reserve funds, but those funds are all gone.
The proposal includes a hike in the millage of 3/10’s of a mil. That would increase the average tax bill less than $15 a year.
Commissioners accepted the staff recommendation for now but may debate it further before final budget approval next Monday night.
