BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – UPDATE (5:00 p.m.) – The Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) has released new information regarding an officer-involved shooting Wednesday.
The incident took place just before 12:30 p.m. at College Street and West Emmett Street.
According to the updated report, officers with the BCPD were called to that area for assistance with a court-ordered mental health pick-up for a 40-year-old Battle Creek woman.
Police say the woman was sitting in a parked car when they arrived. When officers attempted to detain her, the woman waved a handgun and opened fire from inside the vehicle.
Shots were exchanged between officers and the woman until she sped away in the vehicle. She was located a short time later with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder, of which she is currently being treated for.
Two children were in the car during the incident. Neither were injured and they are now in the care of Child Protective Services.
The two Battle Creek officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while Michigan State Police investigate the matter.
Further updates are expected as they develop.
