PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Portage officials say city residents shouldn’t be concerned about their water getting poisoned by lead.
City Manager Larry Schaffer said, for one thing, their system is a lot newer.
“We have no evidence whatsoever that there are any services connected with lead pipes or lead solder in the city,” Shaffer said.
Another difference is the fact that Portage uses groundwater as its source.
Just to reassure the public, Schaffer said the city plans to provide free testing for any homeowner who has concerns about the quality of their water. They also plan to improve required testing.
“We’re not going to just meet the minimum standard,” Shaffer said. “We’re going to double the type of testing that’s done throughout the community.”
The city also plans to hold public forums on the issue at their water treatment facility this spring.
