PAW PAW (WKZO-AM) — Michigan State Police have completed their investigation into a series of wrecks on Interstate 94 near Hartford earlier this month, and say citations are in the mail.
Lt. Dale Hinz says they have issued 20 tickets to drivers directly responsible for causing the pileup on Jan. 17.
“(It was) for violations of the basic speed law, driving too fast for conditions,” Hinz said.
They have also sent their report to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if criminal charges should be filed.
A Northville woman, 78-year-old Carol Griesemer, and her son, 54-year-old Andrew Griesemer, were killed and several were hurt.
If it can be shown that the actions of any of the drivers led to those casualties, it’s conceivable they could be charged.
Of the 20 drivers cited, four were piloting semitrailers.
Hinz says it illustrates the dangers that await drivers who drive too fast on icy roads with poor visibility.
