KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo has issued a second press release to reassure its customers its water is safe, and the water quality problems in Flint are not issues in the city.
Public Services Director Sue Foune said, if there is a lead problem in Kalamazoo, it’s due to lead paint in old homes — not the water.
She said they’ve been adding corrosion inhibitors to tap water for decades now. Those same chemicals were left out when Flint switched to Flint River water.
“We’ve had a corrosion control program since 1956,” Foune said.
She said the city tests 10,000 samples each year for a wide variety of possible contaminants, including lead.
“We have extremely qualified staff who know the regulations, and know what chemicals additions to add and when to add it,” Foune said.
She said Kalamazoo has the second-biggest groundwater-sourced water system in the state.
