PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Portage high school student has collected hundreds of signatures in an online petition that calls for better school security to prevent shootings.
Dillon Nissen, a junior at Portage Northern High School, authored the petition on Change.org. WWMT-TV reports that as of Sunday night there were 598 signatures, which included people outside of the school district.
The petition was created after the Oxford High School shooting November 30.
In his petition called “We Need Change,” Nissen is urging for improved school security in the district. He said he was inspired to create the petition after seeing how easily people could get into the school building.
Nissen told the television station he’d like to see more school officers, more stringent ID checks, and possibly metal detectors.
