EMMETT TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — A midnight snack may be to blame for a fire that displaced at least 15 people from a three-story apartment building in Emmett Township.
Lt. Tony Geigle with Emmett Township Public Safety says it took six agencies an hour to put out the blaze early Tuesday at the Lakeside Apartments on East Michigan Avenue, which started on a stovetop in one of the lower units.
“It kind of got out of hand,” Geigle said. “They tried putting it out themselves, but it quickly spread into the kitchen and it started the rest of the place on fire.”
A dozen units are a total loss and another six have smoke damage.
Geigle says all the occupants were able to get out of the building safely, though one person had to be rescued from the third floor. A firefighter was treated for a minor injury after slipping at the scene.
