KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — One day after the first Sunday buses rolled in Kalamazoo County, the Kalamazoo County Transportation Authority has launched its campaign for a millage renewal.
It’s set to appear on the May 5 ballot.
Metro County Connect, the smaller caller-demanded service, handled about 75 customers on its first Sunday, with primary destinations being church and shopping establishments.
“For years, and years, and years in this county, we have heard that Sunday service is extremely important,” board chairperson Linda Teeter said.
The vote set for May isn’t exactly a renewal, because they will be asking for a smaller millage this time around.
Teeter said, instead of the four-tenths of a mill they currently get, they will be seeking just over three-tenths of a mill for five years.
“We’re able to reduce that and expand service because of the adoption and passage of the Central County Transportation Authority millage,” Teeter said.
Teeter said, on Sept. 6, they will be adding Sunday service to fixed-route bus routes, and adding longer hours with more additional buses.
