BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Police are investigating after a 52-year-old Battle Creek woman lost thousands in a scam through Facebook.
The woman told officers she was contacted by a man through the website last month who claimed he was in the Navy and wanted to marry the victim, but first needed $300 to send to his Nigerian lawyer.
After sending the money, she later received $3,800 in checks, which were allegedly going to be put toward the man’s return trip home. She deposited the checks and sent the same amount of cash to the same lawyer.
She called police after both checks bounced.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of the story noted that the victim lost “millions,” not “thousands” in the scam. The headline has since been corrected and we apologize for the error.
