PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — The Portage City Council has tabled a revision of their gun ordinance.
Council members on Tuesday said they had concerns about a new state law that deregulates pneumatic pistols and pellet guns.
It was supposed to be a simple housekeeping matter to make the current city ordinance, which used to conform to the state law, once again match the revised law. But Councilman Jim Pearson said he wants clarification on exactly the state law means.
“A gun that will expel a BB, or pellet, or gas or air — how are police going to define what that is?” Pearson said.
Councilman Terry Urban said the original state law went too far. However, this one doesn’t go far enough.
“Everything you can think of that can shoot something out, including your Nerf gun, was covered under state law before,” Urban said.
Council members will discuss the ordinance again in two weeks.
