BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — A woman has been killed by gunfire in the home she shared with her boyfriend and her two children on Highway Street, near Cliff Street.
Police say it happened about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, when the man claimed he was cleaning his legally-registered .45 caliber handgun. He said it accidentally discharged, hitting the woman in the side of her abdomen.
911 was called, but the woman was already deceased when first-responders arrived at the scene.
There is no history of problems with the couple.
The 25-year-old man was questioned but has not been arrested. The incident remains under investigation.
UPDATE 11:02 a.m. Monday: The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Kayla Marie Babick.
