KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Congressman Fred Upton says it could be a while before we see nine justices on the U.S. Supreme Court bench again.
The St. Joseph Republican guarantees a party line deadlock in the Senate, saying it’s going to “underscore one of the major problems” the elected body has.
“Whoever the president nominates, they’re not going to get 60 votes to proceed,” Upton said. “And the next president? I don’t know if they’re going to get 60 votes, either.”
But he also said the solution is easy.
“Why do you change the rules? You know, it’s not in the Constitution that they have 60 votes, and in the House, of course, it’s just a majority,” Upton said.
Senate Republicans warn they will block any of President Obama’s nominations to replace the late Antonin Scalia.
