ST. JOSEPH (WKZO-AM) — A letter from the Turkish Consulate to Congressman Fred Upton shows that nation continues to have its eyes set on getting Harbert restaurant owner Ibrahim Parlak deported.
The letter accuses Parlak of being a terrorist and a fugitive who escaped from prison after serving just 16 months of a six-year sentence in the late 1980s for an attack on two Turkish border patrols.
Upton responded with a statement calling it a “troubling letter” that “underscores a real threat to Ibrahim, and only reinforces the fact that we need to continue our bipartisan work to keep Ibrahim in Southwest Michigan.”
The St. Joseph Republican goes on to call for an “all hands on deck effort to stop his unjust deportation.”
Parlak was granted asylum in the U.S. in 1991, but federal authorities have been trying to deport him.
In December, Parkak was granted a 90-day extension to stay in the U.S. by the Department of Homeland Security.
