KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Hundreds turned out to a vigil in downtown Kalamazoo on Monday to remember the six people gunned down in three seperate shootings in the Kalamazoo area.
Residents first filled up the main sanctuary at the First Congregational Church, then filled the chapel where they watched on a big screen TV.
But people kept coming, so they stood in the halls and side aisles, then settled in a large meeting room where they listened to the vigil on a small speaker.
Among the invited speakers was Mayor Bobby Hopewell.
“We are not a perfect place, we will never be a perfect place, but we are community,” Hopewell said. “Tonight, and every night, to honor those that are no longer here, we must remember that word.”
With lit candles in hand, it took everyone 10 minutes to file into Bronson Park for what was called one more show of force against hate and gun violence.
