KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A former Secret Service agent says the Uber driver accused of killing six people in multiple Kalamazoo-area shootings exhibited signs he may have been on the verge of snapping prior to the attacks on Saturday.
Jason Russel says Jason Dalton’s neighbor-reported paranoia was one of several red flags.
“There’s been some talk about gathering weapons and ammo, which is a common thing we see directly preceeding an attack,” Russel said. “You’re probably going to also see some interest in similar attacks.”
He says, just because someone exhibits triggering behavior, it doesn’t always mean an attack is forthcoming. But, it’s an accurate predictor.
“It’s very rare that somebody wakes up in the morning and decides that they’re going to shoot a bunch of people today,” Russel said. “There’s, usually, concerning behavior.”
Uber says it will not change how it screens prospective drivers after background checks cleared Dalton to take fares.
He had no criminal record before Saturday.
