GRAND LEDGE (WKZO-AM) — State Sen. Rick Jones says he’s hoping an Uber driver’s alleged shooting rampage in Kalamazoo will restart discussions in Lansing about applying stronger regulations to rideshare companies.
Jones, R-Grand Ledge, said more scrutiny is needed after Saturday’s tragedy.
“I would hope Uber would now decide that they want to be responsible corporate citizens,” Jones said. “What I was asking for was simple licensing, through state background checks and proper insurance.”
He says a bill he introduced last March would have done just that, but it’s been stalled for months.
“That would be up to other senators to decide if they’ve changed their minds,” Jones said.
Jason Dalton, 45, is accused of killing six in three shootings while taking fares for Uber. The company says it’s not changing its screening protocols.
