LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County has developed policies on child restraints and seclusion in schools that Sen. Margaret O’Brien, R-Portage, says should be adopted statewide.
The policy was developed because a restraint technique used by Parchment Schools on a developmentally disabled student in 2003 led to the boy’s death.
A bipartisan group of legislators have come up with the 10-bill package, endorsed by Lt. Gov. Brian Calley. It would require restraints only be used in emergency situations and follow guidelines and requirements established by the state.
Passage of the package would require the schools and intermediate school districts adopt similar policies and procedures for reporting such events.
O’Brien said it would also provide funding for training staff.
It was proposed this week.
