BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) — A Battle Creek man faces a long list of charges after a traffic stop that generated gun fire and a stand-off that ended with a police dog taking down the suspect.
It began around 3 p.m. Saturday when a Battle Creek police officer pulled over the suspect for a traffic violation near Hubbard and Goodale.
As the officer approached the suspect’s car, gunfire came from within the vehicle and the officer returned fire as the car sped off. No one was hit in that exchange.
The driver fled to an address on West Coolidge St. and responding officers surrounded the place.
They called in the SWAT team, and during the four hour stand-off, they were able to get four members of the suspect’s family out of the home.
Eventually he was subdued by a K-9.
The suspect was taken to the Emergency Room for treatment of dog bites before he was booked at the County Corrections Center.
Battle Creek Police have not released the suspect’s age or name or what may have motivated the initial gunplay and subsequent stand-off. Charges are pending.
