BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A strike which has lasted for over two months against Kellogg’s by the union representing nearly 1,400 workers at four cereal plants continues after union members voted down a tentative agreement that was reached last week.
One official for the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union said the vote against the contract was overwhelming.
The company expressed disappointment by saying on its web site, “The tentative agreement would have provided an accelerated, defined path to legacy wages and benefits for transitional employees, and wage increases and enhanced benefits for all, on top of what is already an industry-leading compensation package, among other items. The tentative agreement included no concessions or takeaways.”
The statement went on to say, “it appears the union created unrealistic expectations for our employees.”
Kellogg’s has hired permanent replacement employees in positions vacated by striking workers. Officials for the cereal maker say while it was certainly not the result they had hoped for, “we must take the necessary steps to ensure business continuity.”
