LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A bill that would require employees at Secretary of State’s offices to verbally ask residents if they want to be organ donors has cleared the Michigan Senate unanimously.
Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, is a sponsor of “Lauren’s Law,” named for a previous organ recipient. He said over 100,000 patients nationwide and 3,500 in Michigan are on organ donation waiting lists.
The bill now heads for the House.
The number of people signed up to be organ donors has doubled in Michigan in the last five years because the opportunity has been offered at SOS locations since 2011, but there is still a gap between the supply and demand for organs.
