KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Michigan is expected to accept 5100 refugees this year, the highest since 2002, and last night Kalamazoo reaffirmed that it is a “welcoming community” and willing to accept some of those refugees.
They did this despite warnings from critics that some of the people coming in might be terrorists.
Last week, the House Judiciary Committee voted out a bill that would cap the number of refugees and increase security measures.
Vice Mayor Don Cooney read the city’s resolution reaffirming that Kalamazoo is a welcoming community. He also called efforts to stifle immigration illegal and immoral.
Gulnar Husein, a Kalamazoo professor, praised the city for its acceptance despite a growing national mood of intolerance toward Muslim people.
The resolution was passed unanimously.
