KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — One of the least popular aspects of downtown Kalamazoo is about to get more expensive as the Downtown Development Authority looks for more funding to improve parking facilities and replace surface lots that are developed into structures.
They will propose to the Kalamazoo City Commission that meter to hike meter rates. They will also encourage meter enforced until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Parking is currently free on weekends and after 5 p.m.on weekdays.
Under the proposal, tickets for expired meters will jump from $10 to $15, and rates at most surface lots and ramps, both short-term and long-term, will also go up.
They will retain a number of free 90-minute parking spaces on the Kalamazoo Mall and along Michigan Avenue.
