KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — It’s an old scam with a new twist and whoever is responsible should hope they never have to come before a judge facing charges, officials with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said.
Con artists are calling victims, claiming they are representatives of the Kalamazoo’s 8th District Court and saying that fines, fees or penalties are owed and if the victims don’t pay immediately they could be going to jail.
They request credit card numbers and, if the get them, they begin using them immediately to make purchases over websites.
Undersheriff Paul Matyas says they can be persuasive and persistent, but the real courts would never operate this way. Anyone caught committing such a crime will likely get a very frosty reception in a real court.
