KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A large and receptive audience greeted Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore at Miller Auditorium on Wednesday.
Moore was given his choice of Western Michigan University baseball caps to wear, mentioning that it was the first time he had ever spoken at WMU, wondering why it took so long.
He went beyond calling for Gov. Rick Snyder’s resignation, calling instead for his arrest. He said the situation in Flint was not a “water crisis,” but a “race crime.”
The Flint native said the only towns that were assigned emergency managers all were predominantly minority towns. Moore says the U.S. Corps of Engineers should be immediately sent to Flint to swap out all the lead pipes.
Moore was also critical of Donald Trump and the kind of people who back the New York billionaire. He gave a rousing endorsement for Bernie Sanders, and also had some nice things to say about Hillary Clinton, but says he is backing Bernie.
It was Moore’s first public speaking engagement since a bout with pneumonia earlier this year. He only planned to speak for 30 minutes and went on for more than an hour.
It was followed by a panel discussion with local members of the Lewis Walker Institute board.
Moore also saluted Merle Haggard, who wrote a song for his latest documentary. The country music legend died on his birthday Wednesday at the age of 79.
