KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — (Article by Jim McKinney) According to the calendar, winter is still officially 19 days away.
But according to meteorologists, winter began on Wednesday, December 1st, and will last through the end of February.
Those who predict and present the weather have divided up the calendar into four three-month blocks, with December through February designated as winter. This is done to keep weather records consistent, in addition to the fact that that period traditionally has the coldest average temperatures during the year.
The average high temperature in the Kalamazoo area will drop to its lowest mark of 31 degrees about the middle of January, and will slowly increase to around 38 degrees by the end of February, when meteorological spring makes an appearance on March 1.
