KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Uber passenger Matt Mellen, who called 911 to complain about Jason Dalton just an hour before he allegedly began his killing spree in Kalamazoo, was bounced between three emergency operators before he finally got to make his complaint.
That’s because his wild ride with Dalton was on West Main Street, which travels through multiple jurisdictions heading west.
First, the dispatcher from the Kalamazoo County answered, but when he mentioned he was dropped off at Nichols Road, he was shifted to the Kalamazoo Township dispatcher. But when he said that Dalton struck a car near the Henderson Castle, he was transferred to the city dispatcher.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller said it did not impact the police response. An alert was issued for area police agencies to watch for Dalton’s silver Chevrolet Equinox.
Dalton parked that vehicle a few hours later and spent most of the night in another Chevrolet.
A consolidated dispatch project is already underway.
