KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The 25-year-old mother who was shot four times at a Kalamazoo townhome complex in the first of three shootings that left six dead nearly two months ago has made her first statement to the press.
Tiana Carruthers sang her appreciation Thursday and also said she’s thankful.
“You guys don’t know how much of a hero you guys are to me,” Carruthers said. “I would have never been able to do without your cards, your support, your love.”
She remains in a wheelchair with injured legs, a punctured liver and a reconstructed arm.
“When this happened, I knew that somebody or some thing was with me,” Carruthers said.
She also said she harbors no hatred for the accused gunman, 45-year-old Uber driver Jason Dalton.
“I feel like I should, but I don’t,” Carruthers said. “Sometimes, I get angry with myself because I don’t.”
Carruthers is now recovering at home.
The second survivor, 14-year-old Abigail Kopf, is slated to return to her home in Battle Creek next week.
