KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Monday will be the fifth anniversary of the shooting incident that took the life of Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Eric Zapata.
He was shot while chasing down a felon and suspected gunman in the Milwood neighborhood in 2011. On Saturday, there will be two events to honor his sacrifice as the first Kalamazoo Public Safety officer to lose his life in the line of duty.
The annual EZ 5K and 10K runs will be staged at Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Texas Township campus. Late registration will begin at 7 a.m. at the campus. The races begin at 9 a.m.
This will be the first year for the longer run.
At noon on Saturday, officers and family members will conduct a recognition ceremony on the north Kalamazoo Mall at the site of the Zapata Memorial. The community is invited to attend.
