FLINT (WKZO-AM) — Gov. Rick Snyder is proposing the toughest lead and copper restrictions in the nation, insisting that federal requirements are not restrictive enough in the wake of the Flint water crisis.
It would lower the requirement for parts-per-million to the World Health Organization standard, require regular testing in educational, care and large residential facilities and require the replacement of all lead lines in Michigan over the next decade.
Home sales would require a disclosure if there is lead plumbing in the service lines.
But Snyder admits that it’s just a proposal and will have to be properly vetted through the legislature first.
Snyder was in Kalamazoo on Friday. Kalamazoo already has a plan in place to replace lead service lines, but that plan stops at the curb lawn. Anything beyond that is the homeowner’s responsibility and would have to come out of their pockets.
