DETROIT (WKZO-AM) — Because of a weekend holiday, The IRS has given everyone an extra three days to submit their tax forms, and the State of Michigan has also adjusted their tax deadline, just to avoid confusion.
It may be difficult to book a tax preparer at this late date. It’s their busy season. IRS Spokesman Luis Garcia says the easiest way to file is to go to IRS.gov and pick a tax program.
Earners who make less than $62,000/year can use them for free.
He says taxpayers that don’t have all their paperwork in order, or are missing forms can file for an extension but they still insist that taxpayers send money, even if it’s only an estimate of what might be owed.
If it’s possible to file, but not possible to pay, there are options available at their website to arrange for a payment plan. Garcia says the worst thing a taxpayer can do is to not file some kind of form and not send money. He says the fines really can get steep in that case.
Post Offices in major towns used to stay open until midnight on tax day just to make sure that everyone made the deadline, but a budget crunch at the Postal Service and the increase in the number of people who file electronically has ended that option.
That means you have until the Post Office closes on Monday to file your forms.
