LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The active shooter alert bill proposed by Kalamazoo-area legislators has cleared a House committee and is on its way to the full Michigan House for a vote.
It was proposed following the February shooting spree that left six dead in Kalamazoo back in February.
After the incident, there were a number of complaints that there was no system to use to notify the community that a gunman was at large.
The bill penned by Rep. Brandt Iden, R-Oshtemo, sets up that system. A companion bill by Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, makes it a crime to report false information that triggers an alarm, and an additional bill proposed by Rep. David Maturen, R-Vicksburg, would allow authorities to pass the cost of the response to the suspect.
Iden said he will seek swift passage from House leadership and get it shipped to the Senate.
Gov. Rick Snyder has said he will sign the bill if it makes it to his desk.
