KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A local chapter of Moms Demand Action is forming in Kalamazoo.
The issue of gun violence has never been more on the minds of area residents following the mass-killing in February that left six dead, and now some of the relatives of those victims, the survivors of other shootings, educators and others are getting organized to do something about it.
They held a meeting with state organizers in Kalamazoo on Thursday to recruit new members and organize some upcoming events. They have already been to Lansing to lobby lawmakers and are planning a local event on June 2 to coincide with the national organization’s campaign.
They say the chapters in other states have been effective in derailing legislation they opposed and in countering the efforts of NRA lobbyists. Katie Zamora said one goal they have in Michigan is keeping guns out of schools, which is currently being debated in Lansing.
Zamora said they just need to get together and let lawmakers know that the vast majority of Americans will no longer vote for lawmakers who don’t vote for common sense legislation on guns.
They would also like to see legislation that would require gun owners secure their guns in their homes to avoid accidental deaths.
