KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) Kalamazoo Prosecutor Jeff Getting says they won’t be cutting any deals with accused mass murderer Jason Dalton and his attorney.
During a news conference held on the south steps of Kalamazoo’s County Courthouse following Friday’s competency hearing Getting told reporters that he has every intention of taking it to trial unless Dalton pleads guilty first.
He says he has enough witnesses to get through the preliminary hearing without having to rely on anything Dalton has said since his arrest.
The Prosecutor handed out a copy of the 7-page report from the Forensic Psychiatrist who examined Dalton and recommended that he be found competent to stand trial.
She determined while he may be a little fuzzy on the details of what happened on the night he allegedly shot 8-people, killing six, he is perfectly rational and understands the charges he faces and can aid in his defense.
That is why she recommended that Dalton be found competent to stand Trial.
Getting says the finding did not surprise him, given what he knows about the case and what Dalton told detectives after his arrest. In fact he would have been surprised if the psychiatrist had found him incompetent.
Now both the defense and prosecution have a May 20th preliminary exam to prepare for.
