KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A major conference on elder abuse will be held on the Western Michigan University campus on Monday.
It’s one of the most under reported crimes in Michigan. Judy Sivik with the Area Agency on Aging says only one in 25 cases of elder abuse are ever reported to authorities, and it can take many forms — from verbal and psychological abuse, to more physical sorts of assaults, to financial exploitation.
Around 160 professionals from law enforcement, financial institutions, attorneys, mental health and aging professionals, EMTs and senior advocates have signed up to attend the day-long program. They will hear experts from across the nation like Paul Greenwood, the Deputy District Attorney of San Diego County, who heads up their elder abuse prosecutions.
The conference is being held at the Fetzer Center from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
