KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County voters did not see a millage renewal they did not like on the ballot Tuesday. However, a proposal to do away with the village of Richland was roundly defeated.
All big decisions impacting a lot of pocketbooks, but they were all choices made by a relatively small minority. The one exception was Richland, where emotions ran high over their divisive ballot initiative.
Kalamazoo County Clerk Tim Snow says 42 percnet turned out in Richland — most of them voting for the status quo.
The rest of the county had an average turnout of just 10.7 percent, which was lower than expected. It may have sunk into single digits if not for the big turnout in Richland.
Snow said he heard from township clerks that several people were unaware there was an election.
