KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Rep. Aric Nesbitt is defending the letter he sent to Attorney General Bill Schuette earlier this week, urging him to launch a probe into the Detroit Teachers’ Union for organizing “sick-outs” on Monday and Tuesday.
He says the teachers and the union must be held accountable for what he believes were illegal strikes.
“About 46,000 students for 1.4 million hours weren’t receiving an education,” Nesbitt said. “I just think that’s disgusting and wrong.”
“Sick-outs” this week were urged over pay concerns and previous “sick-outs” occurred to protest hazardous conditions at Detroit schools, but Nesbitt, R-Lawton, says those reasons aren’t good enough.
“I get the frustration, I guess the stress in the district, but you don’t take it out against the kid,” Nesbitt said.
Schuette has not yet commented on Nesbitt’s letter.
