KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller is hoping to establish a veterans’ court in Kalamazoo by as early as October.
Fuller was in Lansing learning how to administer the court.
“We noticed veterans with a certain set of needs were not being met,” Fuller said. “We wanted to honor the men and women of the services and come up with a court that helps them.”
He says it’s almost identical to the drug court model, providing accountability, but also treatment and hope.
“Veterans are raised through a system of the military that gives them one mindset that helps them do whatever they’re doing,” Fuller said. “We wanted to come up with a court designed around the way they’re trained.”
It would be the 23rd court of its kind in Michigan, Fuller said.
