PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) Westbound Interstate 94 was closed at Oakland Drive for hours during the busy afternoon drive home due to a collision between a minivan and a tractor-trailer that left the roadway blocked by wreckage.
Michigan State Police Lt. Dale Hinz says the crash began when a 48-year-old man from Portage lost control of his minivan and hit the bridge support at Oakland Drive.
The van then careened back into the traffic lanes and was struck by a westbound semitrailer, which was hauling 40-thousand pounds of beer. Both vehicles overturned after the collision and the cab of the semitrailer caught fire.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 40-year-old man from Nashport, Ohio, was able to escape on his own.
The driver of the van was ejected from his vehicle. Both were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital by ambulance.
Their conditions were not released.
Traffic was backed up for miles in the westbound lane of thefreeway while troopers investigated the crash site and cleaned up the wreckage. The investigation is ongoing.
