LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation which aims to reduce wheel thefts by applying used car part purchase standards to tires.
Sen. Rick Jones sponsored the bill.
“Unlike things like copper wiring and catalytic converters, you were not identified and you could be paid cash,” Jones said. “If you take those off a Cadillac, you could be talking about a lot of money.”
Jones, R-Grand Ledge, said the new law prohibits cash payments and will require tire-buyers to keep logs.
“If you ID the person when you bring in the four wheels and you give them a check instead of cash, they’re going to think twice,” Jones said.
First-time violators could spend up to a year in prison.
